How to Make Bold and Italic Text on Instagram

Instagram doesn't let you bold or italicize text from within the app — there's no button for it anywhere, including in your bio. The way people get bold or italic-looking text on Instagram is by pasting in Unicode characters that are already styled to look bold or italic.

Making your Instagram bio bold

Type your bio text into the Bold Text Generator, copy the result, and paste it into the bio field in your Instagram profile settings. Because the bold effect comes from swapped Unicode characters rather than Instagram's own formatting, it will show up bold immediately, and it also works in captions, comments, and DMs.

Making Instagram text italic

The process is the same for italics: type your text into the Italic Text Generator, copy the result, and paste it in. If you want both styles at once, the Bold Italic Text Generator combines them into a single, stronger look, which works well for a short headline at the top of a bio.

Why doesn't Instagram just let me click a bold button?

Instagram's text fields are plain-text only — they don't support rich text formatting like a word processor does. Bold and italic Unicode characters get around this because, to the app, they're just different letters, not a formatting style, so they display exactly as typed everywhere plain text is allowed.

Will it look the same for everyone who views my profile?

Yes, in almost all cases. These are standard Unicode characters supported by every modern phone and browser, so your bold or italic bio will look the same whether someone's on iPhone, Android, or viewing Instagram on desktop.
